Background
Hyde Park in London, Central Park in New York are some of the fine examples of large recreational parks that standout in history. The Central Park project is an endeavour on CIDCO’s part, not to emulate these historic parks, but to create a public park synthesizing the concepts of these parks, relate the park to present times, in particular- the ethos of Navi Mumbai and further reflect into the future.
The need
The project intends to respond to the recreational needs of the Navi Mumbai populace. The project is blend of Landscape and Urban Design. The park is intended to provide an excellent place for active and passive recreation. It also attempts to put Navi Mumbai on International Map.
The location
A large scale open space located at the centre of Kharghar node, Navi Mumbai city and also the Mumbai Metropolitan Region was identified for the development of Central Park. It spreads over an area of around 80 Ha in Sectors 23, 24 & 25. It is a virtually link between the hills dotting Kharghar & the creek. A natural channel runs from hills to creek with fully grown trees and vegetation at sporadic locations.
The activities
This picturesque setting is ideal for a city level park of international level. It accommodates diverse functions of active and passive recreations starting from Jogger’s Tracks, Botanical Gardens, Amphitheatre and Theme Parks to a full
fledged Sports Stadium.
Selection of the Landscape Consultant
For designing such a large park a highly skilled, experienced and creative professional is a pre-requisite. It was decided to select the best consultant through an open competition at international level. National & International firms responded to CIDCO’s advertisement for the ‘Expression of Interest’. After a detailed and thorough scrutiny among the 25 ‘EoIs’ received, six consultants were short-listed.
Five consultants from UK, USA, Singapore and India submitted the ‘Conceptual Master Plan’ for the ‘Central Park’ through drawings, reports and presentation. Eminent jury panel comprising of CIDCO ‘s VC & MD, Chief Architect & Planner and three experts from the fields of Landscape, Urban Planning and Urban Design examined the proposals.
Appointment of the consultant
The jury, panel unanimously selected the proposal prepared by M/s. Madav Consultants (I) Pvt. Ltd. for award of the project and appointment for the same. The consultant is appointed and the work on the project has started in the right earnest.
