Navi Mumbai has excellent connection with Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivali and other surrounding areas by railway. The railway system of
Navi Mumbai consists of commuter rail network, Railway Station –cum –
Commercial Complexes, Inter city railway terminals and railway lines for
goods traffic. There is a plan for meeting out overall requirement of city
for faster, economical and easier movement of people and goods. Direct access from residential areas to job centers by walk, convenient interchange facility from one corridor to another, easier to follow route, comfort and pleasant journey etc. are the main features of the commuter railway system in Navi Mumbai.
Indian Railways had agreed to invest 33 percent in the development of railway system in Navi Mumbai whereas CIDCO will bear 67% for the 200- km rail route, for six corridors consisting of 30 stations, connecting all nodes and neighbouring towns. Two corridors are already commissioned and work is in progress on the third one.
The main rail corridors in the city are:
Thane – Turbhe – Nerul – Vashi route
This track is laid to connect with main central railway line of Mumbai CSTKalyan with Navi Mumbai via Thane station. Broad gauge track with 2 lines has been laid along the following route while serving the specified stations:

This train track also facilitates passengers to take up further travel towards Konkan corridor on the southern side and Thane in the northern side. In addition, it also serves to bring in the workforce for the industrial area of Turbhe. The commuter trains usually of 9 carriage EMUs take approximately 25 minutes to traverse in either direction from one terminal to the other.

Mumbai CST –Wadala – Mankhurd - Vashi –Sanpada -Nerul – Belapur

This rail link connects Panvel with Mumbai CST and passes through various nodes of Navi Mumbai. It serves as a direct link for commuters who travel towards Mumbai CST. In addition, it provides the link with the Konkan railway for onward journeys towards Goa and Southern India. This corridor is also known as ‘Harbour Line’. This corridor serves all the major parts of Navi Mumbai. Panvel railway station on this main line will be the biggest junction in Navi Mumbai similar to that of Dadar station in Mumbai. Mankhurd Vashi line was commissioned in 1992, followed by Vashi-Nerul in 1993 and Nerul-Belapur also in 1993. Belapur to Panvel single line was commissioned in1998 and the Double line connection was completed in 2000 which is having an extension of Mankhurd Belapur railway project.

Future Plans
The Nerul – Uran Rail track of 27 kilometers is currently under construction. The proposed railway stations and the distances are as follows.
