Are you alarmed by the extreme climatic events in Mumbai?
It is interesting to know that Mumbaiites have experienced two
extremely diverse situations in the same month of different years. In July
2005, the city was completely submerged by destructive floods whereas in July
2009, the rainfall being abnormaly scanty, the Metereological
Department expressed fear of drought for the next year.
In a press release dated July 7, 2009, BMC has imposed 30% water cut due to
scanty rains. The water cut could continue or it may even increase if this
situation persists.

Is there a solution to this water crisis?
Wetlands, which include fresh water bodies like lakes, ponds, rivers
and wells, are the best alternative sources of water. in flood like situations
these wetlands also act as buffer zones protecting the surrounding areas from
getting affected.
Presently, most of the wetlands are neglected or becoming dumping sites for
debris and plastic. Release of the sewage water directly in to wetlands makes
them unfit for any use. There is an urgent need to restore and exploit the
resource potential of these wetlands to its fullest.
The current example that being of artificially constructed Powai lake as a
source of potable water, which was mistreated for more than a decade by
releasing sewage water and dumping solid waste into
it. When the drinking water levels in the city are plummeting to high
alert, the lake is being realised for its valuable potential and
hence the authorities are undertaking desilting and cleaning of
lake as a top priority.
