The development plan of Navi Mumbai provides for net work of commuter railway system to give easy access to commercial, residential and industrial areas in Navi Mumbai. As per study conducted it is seen that electric based suburban railway system would be the most economical system of transport for the envisaged population and employment in Navi Mumbai. CIDCO has therefore taken up development work of different railway corridors so as to have integrated pattern of railway net work and the land use for balance development of Navi Mumbai. The commuter railway system envisaged in the development plan provides for six corridors. The total length of Railway Corridors is about 160 kms.
In this direction, CIDCO has already constructed and commissioned Mankhurd – Vashi line May 1992 and further extended upto Belapur in June 1993. Belapur – Panvel Corridor commissioned in June 1998 and Thane-Vashi and have also been commissioned in November 2004. The Railway Stations on these corridors are constructed by CIDCO on cost sharing basis. The Ministry of Railways has also sanctioned Nerul & Belapur – Uran Railways Project in Navi Mumbai and has been incorporated in the works programme of 1996-97. All these Projects have been taken up on cost sharing basis between Railways and CIDCO in the ratio of 33% and 67% respectively. There is a tri-partite agreement between Railways, CIDCO & State Govt. for executing these projects. The part of the finances required is proposed to be met from the surcharge of passengers' fare.
